New Executive Assistant Joins Whayland’s Southern Delaware Management Team
The Whayland Co., with headquarters in Laurel and clients throughout Sussex County and the eastern shore of Maryland, is pleased to announce the addition of executive assistant Sonya Hicks to it’s southern Delaware management team.
Tasked with assisting office staff with various special and daily tasks, this is the second time Hicks has been hired by Whayland President Steve Hentschel to work in the firm’s Laurel headquarters.
Married with a two-year-old son, Whayland’s new executive assistant lives in the Salisbury area and began her second stint with the company at the end of February.
“I felt like it was a big mistake leaving Whayland last year and I was very happy when Steve asked me to come back,” says Hicks, who previously worked for the company as a receptionist. “I enjoy working for Whayland, particularly going to the job sites where I can be more hands on.”
A 2010 graduate of James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury, Hicks left Whayland to take a job in her hometown in June of 2017. But it was primarily a desk job that she decided, after a short stint, wasn’t for her, precipitating her return to Whayland.
“Our business has really been growing and we were definitely searching for someone who could grow with us,” says Hentschel. “I was happy to hear that Sonya was available and was able to start with us right away. She’s a very welcome addition to our team, and we look forward to a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.”
Known for decades as one of Delmarva’s top commercial builders, Whayland has carved out a niche in recent years for building clubhouses at some of southern Delaware’s most well known residential communities.
In her new role, Hicks will be supporting those projects, both from the office and on the actual job sites, working with employees and contractors and ensuring that everything is being completed in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
“That’s really my favorite part of the job, making sure that things go the way they should be going,” says Hicks. “We always strive to do the absolute best that we can, but if something does go awry, we need to immediately figure out how we can fix it and keep our customers happy.”
Since opening its doors in 1950, the management and staff of the Whayland Co., has worked continuously to secure its reputation as a high-value, reasonably priced provider of construction and project management services on the Delmarva Peninsula. The company’s clients have long recognized the value of partnering with a firm that not only offers comprehensive services, but also tailors those services to the clients’ needs.
